The city design code aimed at shaping the overall appearance of the capital has been officially approved.

The Tashkent City Council of People’s Deputies has approved the city design code. The decision was adopted based on a document developed by SM International commissioned by Toshkent Invest Company, taking into account proposals from the city administration. The document establishes rules for planning public spaces, placing urban design elements, decorating commercial facilities, and defining the city’s visual identity. It also includes catalogs of design elements, a list of tourist and gastronomic streets, and the amount of operational fees for landscaping and sanitation. According to the document, district administrations of the capital must develop schemes defining the boundaries of public spaces within two months under the supervision of chief architects. The Architecture and Urban Planning Council will oversee compliance with design code requirements when designing seasonal trade areas, service facilities, and construction works. The Tashkent city administration will ensure compliance with these rules when issuing permits for construction, repair, and reconstruction, as well as when implementing projects related to roads, pedestrian paths, and other infrastructure elements. Within four months, the city administration will develop a program for installing and updating address signs and navigation elements in public areas according to approved standards. The design code requirements will also be integrated into urban planning norms and regulations related to capital construction. Compliance with the design code will be mandatory for organizations, legal entities, and individuals when altering building facades, carrying out reconstruction, installing light structures, landscaping and greening areas, organizing commercial and service facilities, placing advertising elements, and designing or modernizing engineering networks and transport infrastructure. The council’s decision will come into force three months after its official publication. This will allow the systematic implementation of unified standards for the development of the city’s appearance and public spaces in the capital.
